With four stores in Brooklyn, Food Story Natural Market is set to make its debut in Jersey City this spring.

The organic and natural grocer signed a lease for nearly 10,000 square feet of space at Journal Squared, developers KRE Group and National Real Estate Advisors LLC announced Jan. 20.

Food Story’s most recent location opened in Williamsburg in 2021. In Jersey City, the retailer will take up residence at the 68-story Journal Squared Tower 2, offering meats, fish, sushi, fresh produce, hot and cold prepared foods, and fresh flowers and plants.

With 704 rental units, the building leased up in five months last year. Journal Squared Tower 2 in Jersey City.

“We’re a boutique organic market that tries to carry whatever our customers need,” said owner Danny Young in a prepared statement. “We never really considered expanding to New Jersey, but when our broker brought us to Journal Square, we thought it was an outstanding location. It’s a thriving commercial and residential neighborhood and the Journal Squared building is very upscale. We believe our concept will be a great product and service for the area.”

Bobby Antonicello of Grid Real Estate, along with KRE Group’s Justin Gingeleskie, represented ownership in the signing of the lease.

According to Antonicello, recent history has seen a number of Brooklyn retailers looking to set up shop in Jersey City. And not just downtown, “but in all neighborhoods,” he said in a statement.

“In the past, these retailers would say we want a second location in Hoboken, but now they are looking for multiple locations in Jersey City and expanding on their already popular concept at each location,” Antonicello added.

Last June, popular food festival Smorgasburg, which originated in Brooklyn, made its debut in Jersey City.

When it’s completed, Journal Squared will total 1,840 rental units and 36,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space. Tower 2 is the tallest building in the three-tower complex. Work began on the 60-story Tower 3 this past October to deliver 600 residences.
